Who Is Doing the Online Course?

Over the past few years we have seen three main groups of people enrolling in the Online Skipper Theory Course.

1. Students Preparing for the One-Day Skipper Course

Many people want to do the traditional one-day skipper course, but feel nervous or unprepared.

At most academies the student attends a full day of lectures and then writes the SAMSA exam on the same day, often without enough time to properly study the material.

Students who complete the Online Course first arrive at the class already familiar with:

  • boating terminology
  • navigation basics
  • safety procedures
  • the exam syllabus

This allows them to follow the class much more easily and ask the right questions.

Feedback from instructors shows that students who prepare beforehand often achieve exam scores of 90% or higher.

2. Busy People Who Prefer Studying Online

The original purpose of the online course was to help people who do not have the time to sit through a full day of classroom training.

The online format allows students to:

  • study at their own pace
  • repeat sections until they fully understand the material
  • complete the theory in their own time

Depending on the examiner, some students may still need to attend a practical day course, often at a discounted rate, before writing the final exam.

3. Family Members or Friends Who Assist a Licensed Skipper

Many people enroll simply because they spend time on the water with a licensed skipper and want to understand how everything works.

The online course helps them learn the same theory that licensed skippers must master, including:

  • pre-departure safety checks
  • launching procedures
  • basic navigation
  • engine troubleshooting
  • towing skiers and water sports safety

In South Africa, an unlicensed person may operate a vessel under the supervision of a licensed skipper. Having someone onboard who understands the theory and procedures significantly improves safety and teamwork on the water.

How does it work?

  1. Cover the 7 modules in the comfort of your home, in your own time and only continue to the next module once feeling comfortable with the current module. There is no time limit set to complete the course.
  2. You will have a message system which you can use to get support or ask questions.
  3. There is a quiz at the end of each module and, if you use it to test yourself honestly, we can guarantee that you will pass the SAMSA examination paper.
  4. On the completion of all the modules, you will receive a certificate stating that you have completed the online course successfully.
  5. You are now ready to write the final SAMSA exam. You need to write the examination in person with one of the examiners on our panel. SAMSA will not allow anyone to write the final exam online.
  6. On successful completion of the examination the examiner will issue you with an interim license which is valid for 6 months. The examiner will submit all your documents to SAMSA who in turn will issue your permanent license during the 6 month period.

How long will it take?

We believe that the average person with limited experience can complete all the modules in 6 hours. We have seen students completing it in 2 – 3 hours. If you spend 1 to 2 hours a day on the material, it can be completed within a 3 day period. But, as we have mentioned before, you can complete the modules at your own pace.

What do I need to do the online course?

  1. A computer, tablet or device which allows you access the internet.
  2. An internet connection.

Costs

Two fees are payable.

    1. The fee for the online course is R630.00.
    2. SAMSA final exam.  Fees differ from examiner to examiner and are between R2,000 and R2,500 . You will find a link on your Student Page to book for the exam.
  1. The exam fees includes all SAMSA statuary fees.
